Newly designed truck gains up to 10% more fuel efficiency

The Mack Pioneer™ is designed from the ground up to have the most advanced aerodynamics and efficient powertrain of any truck Mack has ever offered. The result is a truck that pushes the boundaries of fuel efficiency while meeting the most stringent greenhouse gas (GHG) restrictions. The combination of optimized aerodynamics and powertrain innovations result in up to 10% fuel efficiency increase compared to previous models.

Pioneer's dramatic design forms the base of its aerodynamic superiority, most notably with a completely new streamlined cab. The cab employs a wedge shape, new chassis fairings and an aggressively sloped windshield to minimize drag, along with a host of innovations and improvements

Aerodynamics

Pioneer's sleek, streamlined shape is the result of major aerodynamic advances that keep air flowing smoothly over the truck's surface without creating drag-inducing turbulence. By sealing the gaps previously found on the front of the truck, airflow remains attached to the exterior and drag is reduced, especially at highway speeds. Pioneer's design was dictated by prioritizing aerodynamics through the shape and air flow, along with improved engine efficiency, for the whole package of fuel economy improvements.

Every design detail from the dramatic, streamlined cab exterior, down to the exact placement of the Bulldog hood ornament, results in closing gaps to reduce the energy expended by the powertrain to overcome air resistance. The important tractor-to-trailer distance is minimized, and airflow is optimized through longer side extenders and fairings, plus roof fairing enclosures along the top of the cabs to channel air smoothly to the trailer's body. The front bumper and extra-low ground effects keep the air moving smoothly along the bottom edges of the cab, for reduced drag, while optimized wheel openings also reduce turbulence and increase airflow.

The curved hood, sloped windshield, smaller and more aerodynamic mirrors and side deflectors are all designed to minimize flow separation and promote smooth airflow across the surface of the cab.

The aerodynamic improvements can contribute up to 7-8% improvement in fuel economy over previous models.

In addition to a safe, fuel-efficient truck, an up to 10% fuel economy savings creates a significant economic boost to the customer’s bottom line and total cost of ownership. A 10% reduction in fuel can make a big impact at the pump. If a driver puts more than 110k miles on their chassis, they can see up to 10% reduction in fuel consumption which translates to a savings of upward of $5000 at the pump.

Fuel Economy features

The Mack Pioneer gains additional fuel economy through features that reflect Mack's 125 years as the technology leader and innovator for trucks.

Updated MP®13 HE

The already extremely efficient and powerful Mack MP13 HE Engine is updated for further fuel efficiency improvements. The engine delivers up to 2-3% fuel efficiency improvement over previous versions due to combustion chamber improvements and a variable speed oil pump. The combustion improvements involve a change to Mack's Wave piston design as well as a change in the connecting rod length and piston height.

Pioneer's engine has two new power ratings: a 505 HP/1,850 lb.-ft rating as well as a 505 HP/1,950 lb.-ft rating. It can also be spec’d with 415 and 445 HP. All four ratings will use the same engine hardware, but the 1,950 lb.-ft rating will drive a heavier driveline to handle the increased torque.

The engine will come with an updated engine brake curve that combines the power of the Mack PowerLeash Engine Brake with an exhaust brake mounted to the outlet flange of the turbocompound unit. This has a capability to deliver routine braking power over 400 HP.

Why you should buy

The Mack Pioneer is an industry changer that that showcases how prioritizing innovations in aerodynamics and powertrain improvements achieves significant fuel efficiency that’s both good for the environment, meets EPA standards and contributes to improved fuel cost savings and total cost of ownership.

The new cab platform includes superior aerodynamics designed to reduce drag and increase airflow.

“Every design decision was guided by the mission to displace air smoothly with minimal resistance. Prioritizing aerodynamics, the refined shape, optimized airflow, and updated engine work together to deliver a comprehensive package for improved fuel efficiency.”
