Mack Trucks advanced safety systems keep truckers safe
From distracted drivers to inclement weather, you never know when you might encounter danger on the road. Safety is an important consideration for any driver, and that starts with choosing a truck designed with safety in mind.
No matter what you’re using your truck for—from highway to refuse—Mack trucks feature advanced safety technology systems that will keep you safe behind the wheel. Here’s a few of our favorite features:
Collision prevention: The Sensata PreView Collision Warning System (PRECO), available on Mack®TerraPro® and LR/LR Electric models, can help drivers avoid collisions with pedestrians, cyclists, and others when driving through populous areas.
“The Sensata PreView is basically a radar system where you have radar on all four sides of the vehicle, and it will tell you if it detects any objects,” says Josh Seiferth, Sr. Product Manager, LCOE, for Mack. “The game changer is that it sees people. It sees bicyclists. It sees any type of object, whether metal or organic. And it sees them all at any speed, whether you're stopped or you're driving fast or anywhere in-between.”
Automated braking, warnings and more: The Bendix Wingman Fusion—which can be found on Mack Anthem®, Granite®, Pinnacle™, and LR/LR Electric models—holistically integrates radar, cameras, and brakes to assist drivers and prevent accidents. The advanced driver assistance system offers improved Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) from 35 mph up to 50 mph speed reduction, including multilane continuation of AEB events; highway departure warning and braking; adaptive cruise control with braking; alerts for following distance, speeding, and lane departure; and more.
Cabs built for safety: Tim Wrinkle—Mack’s Sr. Product Manager, Vocational and Medium-Duty—says he’s especially proud of the strength of Mack’s galvanized steel cab. Mack cabs are not only certified safe and rigorously internally tested, but they feature an array of safety features such as exterior grab handles, large rear widows and passenger side peep windows standard.
Within the cab itself, Mack’s Anthem, Granite, and Pinnacle trucks feature RollTek safety technology to prevent driver fatalities. “Most driver fatalities come from rollover events instead of forward collisions,” Wrinkle says. “This seat is designed with its own side airbag, automatic sear lowering and seat belt pre-tensioner to protect the driver.”
But that’s not where driver safety stops. For example, Wrinkle notes that the number one way drivers injure themselves in the field is by entering and exiting the vehicle. So when they designed the Mack Granite, they gave it a low ground-to-cab floor distance and
stair-like entry for safety getting in and out of the cab, as well as grab handles on interior and exterior to assure 3 points of contact for entry and exit.
“We’re proud of our safety systems,” Seiferth says. “And we’re constantly working to improve them and better protect our drivers and the communities in which they operate.”
